Hello
I’m Heidi. I spend a lot of my time working as writer, a freelance editor, and a Wild Writing coach. When I’m not scribbling in a notebook, you can find me outside on a mountain bike, skiing, or running rivers. I’m a decent cook, a crappy scheduler, an enthsiastic singer, and a devoted (but sometimes struggling) mother, wife, and daughter. I try to be a good person, but am learning to accept all the ways I am.
My Story
Before writing for myself, I spent more than 20 years working as a freelance communications and policy consultant, specializing in global health topics like safe water, immunization services, vaccine supply chains, and family planning. I left all that in 2019 and went back to school for a master’s degree in nonfiction writing. My essays have been published in several magazines and literary journals including Orion, Litro Magazine, Cagibi, Cream City Review, and Prairie Schooner. I am getting ready to publish a collection of essays about paddling the Spokane River. One of these essays was included in Allegory Review’s nonfiction anthology, Allegheny, and another was a finalist for the Michigan Quarterly Review's 2024 James A. Winn Prize in Nonfiction. More of my work can be found by subscribing to my newsletter, The Good Question.
