Women's Wild Writing Circles

Write from the inside

Writing requires unearthing

Most of us are terrified to share our writing. We can’t tell if it’s any good, whether we picked the right words, or if it’s saying something important. We try to be clever, put on a show, or we avoid writing altogether—when all we really want is share our truth, not realizing that the truth is all anyone wants to read anyway. Wild Writing® is a practice that helps you bypass the inner critic and learn to relax into the wisdom of your natural voice.

Here’s how it works

  • I read you a poem.

  • You listen and let it sink in.

  • I read it again and give you some jump off lines.

  • We write for 10-15 minutes.

  • After we write, we each read aloud.

  • We listen without comment or critique.

  • We do this three times.

Hello. I’m Heidi.

I decided to offer Wild Writing workshops because I realized what an important tool it had become in my writing practice and in my life. I didn’t love it at first. I struggled with control because I wanted to reveal only the best parts of myself. I felt uncomfortable sharing my raw thoughts with strangers.

But over time, I learned to trust my pen, developed deep bonds with the women in my circle, and learned to bear the discomfort of being seen and heard as the unfinished person I am. Wild Writing has opened the doors on my writing practice, and helped me access parts of myself I’d locked away.

Wild writing unlocked my writing brain. I found Heidi's chosen lines of poetry much more engaging springboards than other prompts I've been given. This experience felt at once liberating and vulnerable, generative and truthful. The expectation of no feedback, even in our tightly knit group, was strangely comforting, and Heidi was a master facilitator.

Heidi creates a warm and welcoming environment for her students. She allows us to settle into the class and feel safe finding our authentic voice. I love her choice of poems and her ability to create a rich opportunity for writing.
